What to do with the old editor

A new visual editor will be introduced sonner or later (before the 1.0 release). But what should we do with the current Markdown editor? I know some people prefer to write in Markdown instead of using a WYSIWYG editor.

Should we keep it or drop it, knowing that importing articles from uploaded Markdown files will be supported at some point too?

Keep it along the new visual editor. It will help those who wants to type markdown. It will help debugging the visual editor. It will help if you need to swap the choosen editor to a new one

It will help debugging the visual editor

Actually it won't, as a new format (probably based on JSON) that will allow more customization (for instance setting image alignement and sizes as you can do on Medium) will be used, and converted back to Markdown on the fly if you use the old editor.

I think the current Markdown editor is great, although it could probably be enhanced by giving a simple Markdown formatting (bold, italic...) legend to it, before a wholly new visual editor comes along....?

Does the WYSIWYG editor automatically convert typed Markdown into WYSIWYG display? Ghost does this fairly well. For example: if you type em or strong, it will be automatically converted in front of your eyes into italics or bold.

Mardown editor allows to write fast and clean. It's enough for most of writings (even if most of writers will not use it, I know).

This feature could be implemented yes

Keep it along the new visual editor

For people knowing markdown, it's faster to write using only the markdown syntax than with a visual editor.
